Anyone or HK astronomy groups / societies will organize group tour to view the solar eclipse on 16 March 2016?

到目前為止只知道香港天文學會有計劃於2016年3月5日至12日 ( 3月9日日食 ) 到印尼哈馬黑拉島 ( Halmahera ) 特納提市 ( Ternate，北緯 0°46.1680'，東經 127°22.6952' ) 進行海外日食觀測活動，估計全程每人將花費近二萬港元。但根據2013年至2015年當地天氣記錄顯示3月9日多數出現多雲天氣不利日食觀測。

Make a 20K gamble.

The totality last for more than 4 minutes ! 20K seems worth it.

4 minutes is only for the centre of the totality path. That is the middle of the Pacific Ocean where you need a cruise ship to do the observation.

When it is over Halmahera, totality will last no more than 2.5 minutes.

The weather is not promising in March.

With a stake of 20K, I will fold.

閣下有意於2017年8月21日到美國進行日全食觀測，本人參考香港天文學會於該會論壇內發表有關是次日全食觀測地點選擇的文章內容，愚見認為暫時最佳觀測地點會是俄勒岡州 ( Oregon ) 的安大略市 ( Ontario，北緯44.0233°，西經116.9729° ) 及亨廷頓市 ( Huntington，北緯44.3490°，西經117.2663° )。從全食帶途經的美國州份八月份氣候數據得知愛達荷州 ( Idaho ) 博伊西市 ( Boise ) 的晴天出現率高達91.4% ( 觀測記錄共1011份 )，鄰近的安大略市的晴天出現率高達92.7% ( 觀測記錄共355份 )，而接近全食帶中心的亨廷頓市在地理上接近上述兩個城市估計晴天出現率會相當高。但現在仍未知道香港天文學會會否組團到上述城市進行觀測活動。

you may want to check with airasia
sometimes they have special promotion for advance booking!

Just checked the current price is around $2000 in total (tax included) for HKG-->KUL-->PLM-->KUL-->HKG
i recommend you buy the ticket for KUL-->PLM-->KUL first

sometimes there is promotion for KUL cheap tickets by other airlines

I booked two tickets to go Ternate in early April, but not with HKAS, just me and my wife, and it costs only ~$3800HKD per person with tax.
(I just know HKAS also going to Ternate by this post...)


Transfer at Jakarta, the main problem is, return flight have a 12-13 hours time slot in between the transfer flights, have to stay in the airport and wait.......just have to accept it.

I booked online directly with Garuda Indonesia...just for your information.

But another concern is accommodation.....I already booked an apartment way 1.5 years ahead of the 2016 eclipse. Now seems hard to find an accommodation.


Just for your information. Hope you find cheap tickets and hotel too!!

P.S. For the weather forecast....if it costs more than 20k, or even 10k, I will not go too of course.

從香港天文學會於該會論壇內發表有關2017年8月21日美國日全食觀測地點選擇的文章內容得知懷俄明州 ( Wyoming ) 東部地區於八月份的晴天出現率較西部地區為高。例如位於懷俄明州東部的道格拉斯市 ( Douglas，北緯42.7593°，西經105.3826° ) 其晴天出現率為83.6% ( 觀測記錄共441份 )，而托林頓市 ( Torrington，北緯42.0640°，西經104.1844° ) 其晴天出現率為83.9% ( 觀測記錄共317份 )，而接近全食帶中心的卡斯帕市 ( Casper，北緯42.8385°，西經106.3123° ) 其晴天出現率為80.2% ( 觀測記錄共983份 ) 。

That's relatively considered cheap. Because I in Malaysia also need HKD3500 to Ternate of same airline.
