The transparency of PTC improved a lot comparing to Friday night. The 16 incher saw galaxy (ngc1387) as faint as mag 12 - this was a record at PTC.Steve 寫:清楚看到彗核的邊界
The comet glowed much brighter inside the 16 incher. What you saw was the solid core of the comet, resolved out by the 16 inch telescope.
Only very few comets have its solid core resolved by telescope visually. You had witnessed one. (even Hale Bopp's core could not be resolved out)
And I belief that you had caught the best moment to come out because it was predicted the comet glowed brightest at 11th January and after that cloudy weather will persist for a number of days.

I did not see comet LoveJoy, but I do find the atmosphere was more steady that night.Chanlunlun 寫:The transparency of PTC improved a lot comparing to Friday night. The 16 incher saw galaxy (ngc1387) as faint as mag 12 - this was a record at PTC.Steve 寫:清楚看到彗核的邊界

I was at my roof top using my 12" Dob, and I pushed the magnification to over 300X, because I just wanted to test me new 2X barlow with 2" insert, and I use it with a 100 degree 9mm eyepiece, at focal length 1524mm.
Under that ridiculously high power, the moon under that atmospheric condition was very steady, and the craters were breathtaking.
I can only imagine what stunning images you all saw!

Actually comet Lovejoy could be a very good target to test the resolving power of your setup.大黃傻貓GARFIELD 寫:I did not see comet LoveJoy, but I do find the atmosphere was more steady that night.Chanlunlun 寫:The transparency of PTC improved a lot comparing to Friday night. Your 12 incher should be more than sufficient to resolve the nucleus into visible view inside the eyepiece. It's a little pity that you didn't see the comet. It's quite unusual to see comet's nucleus resolved into view.
Of course in PTC the steadiness was poor and we only saw a circular disc, no particular shape was defined. But it was still an memorable experience.

I will try this week on Thu or Fri when there may be clear intervals in the sky..Chanlunlun 寫:Actually comet Lovejoy could be a very good target to test the resolving power of your setup.大黃傻貓GARFIELD 寫:I did not see comet LoveJoy, but I do find the atmosphere was more steady that night.Chanlunlun 寫:The transparency of PTC improved a lot comparing to Friday night.
