For a 16 inch tool 3/4 inch thickness is more than sufficient. It is better to have a 1/2 inch thickness. It saves money and reduces risk of glass brokage.
I don't recommend too thick glass tool - it will smash easily upon contact with hot liquid pitch during lap making stage.
