AAVSO Special Notice #372

Probable new red variable IRAS 17378-3411 = PNV J17411305-3413235
October 1, 2013

Koichi Nishiyama (Kurume, Japan) and Fujio Kabashima (Miyaki,
Japan) report their discovery of a possible nova - which now
appears to be a red variable - in Sco at unfiltered magnitude
11.1 on unfiltered CCD images taken 2013 Sep. 30.44605 UT. They
confirmed their discovery on images taken around 2013 Sep 30.4621
UT. Nothing was seen down to magnitude 13.5 and 13.7 on images
taken 2013 Jul 11.539 UT and 12.571 UT, respectively, or on DSS
or USNO-B1.0 images. A check for minor planets was carried out.
The object was reported to the Central Bureau for Astronomical
Telegrams Transient Objects Confirmation Page
(http://www.cbat.eps.harvard.edu/unconf/tocp.html) and assigned
the name PNV J17411305-3413235.

Photometry on 2013 Sep. 30.53343 UT by T. Yusa (Osaki, Japan)
using an iTelescope remotely at Siding Spring, Australia,
indicates the object is extremely red: 18.3 B, 14.85 V, 11.6 R.

The object has been correlated with the infrared source
2MASS J17411309-3413226 and IRAS 17378-3411. J-K = 2.40 and
spectral type = M6.5. M. Templeton (AAVSO) indicates the object,
a red variable, might be a long period variable.

Visual and multicolor observations of IRAS 17378-3411 =
PNV J17411305-3413235 are requested. Spectroscopic observations
are also encouraged.

Sebastian Otero (Buenos Aires, Argentina) indicates that the field
is crowded, with two 17th mag. stars 8" and 10" to the SW and two
15th mag. stars 16" and 19" to the E and NE.

Coordinates: RA 07 41 13.10 Dec. -34 13 22.6 (2000.0)

Finder charts with comparison stars may be created using the AAVSO
International Variable Star Plotter (VSX, http://www.aavso.org/vsp).

Observations should be reported to the AAVSO International Database
using the VSX primary name IRAS 17378-3411.

This AAVSO Special Notice was compiled by Elizabeth O. Waagen.
