AAVSO Alert Notice 647
Nova in Ophiuchus - N Oph 2018 No. 3 = PNV J17422408-2053088
August 13, 2018
Event: Nova in Ophiuchus - N Oph 2018 No. 3 = PNV J17422408-2053088
Discovered by: C. Jacques, J. Barros, E. Pimentel, and P. Holvorcem, on behalf of the Brazilian Transient Search - BraTS (at SONEAR Observatory, Oliveira, Brazil); via TOCP
Discovery magnitude: unfiltered CCD magnitude 11.1 (on three frames, 10-sec exposure, using an astrograph 11" f/2.2 + CCD camera)
Discovery date: 2018 August 08.9596 UT
Coordinates (2000.0): R.A. 17 42 24.09 Decl. -20 53 08.7 (from VSX)
Spectra: Spectroscopy obtained by S. C. Williams (Lancaster) et al. on 2018 Aug 9.93 UT with the FRODOSpec spectrograph on the 2-m Liverpool Telescope indicate that the object is a Fe II-type galactic nova in the early stages of an eruption (ATel #11928).
A high resolution Echelle spectrum obtained by U. Munari et al. on 2018 Aug 10.839 UT with the Varese 84cm telescope suggests significant reddening (ATel #11940).
Observing recommendations: Observations of all types (visual, CCD, DSLR, PEP, spectroscopy) and multiple bands, particularly BVI, as instrumentation permits are strongly encouraged as the nova evolves.

Notes:
a. Designated PNV J17422408-2053088 when posted to the IAU Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams Transient Object Confirmation Page (TOCP). Some information in this Alert Notice is taken from the TOCP page.
b. P. Schmeer writes that the Pan-STARRS1 source PSO J174224.016-205308.866 (position end figures 24.013s, 08.90"; i= 20.17 mag) and the Vista variable VVV J174224.02-205307.77 are both 1" away from the reported coordinates of the transient. The amplitude of this eruption is at least 11 magnitudes. No outbursts or eruptions were detected by the ASAS-SN Sky Patrol since 2015 Feb. 16.
c. Position end figures
