牛頓鏡的副鏡是平面斜鏡,把主鏡光線折曲90度至鏡筒側.
傳統卡式鏡的副鏡是凸面,在主鏡未聚焦之前便反射光線至主鏡之後,主鏡中央有洞讓光線通過.
Gregorian的副鏡是凹面鏡,在主鏡成焦之後才反射光線至主鏡之後,同樣主鏡中央有洞讓光線通過.它也是卡式鏡的一種.
平面或凸面的副鏡較難測試,而凹副鏡容易測試,所以選用Gregorian設計來作為第一支自製卡式鏡.
