18 hrs of rough grinding on 24 in - we are almost there

Dear ATMs,

We are almost there. After 2 hours of laboring on Wednesday and another 4 hours of hard working today we finally get a sagitta of 9.8 mm, amount to a focal length of 90.4 inch, or a f/3.77 curve. A total of 90 cubic inch of glass has been removed by us. One more hour of work will bring us to the f/3.5 goal.

It has proved that our calculation is very accurate. Our estimation of a glass removal rate of 5 cubic inch per hour is very close to realistic. As we have predicted that 19 hours of work is required to bring the mirror to f/3.5, now we have proceed 18 hours so far and one more hour of labor will finish the remaining 9% of work – we are even astonished by how accurate our estimation is.

So far we have consumed on 20 lbs of #40 carbo, being 15% less than our estimation. This is because we had recycled some of the used carbo to regrind the mirror, just to discovered that the labor involved in recycling is too great, just did not worth to do so.

It again proved that the students are very strong labor force. They can grind the mirror without stop for a consecutive two hours.

Dear Mr. Wah!,

Our students are short and slim. Physically they are weak.

Nevertheless they have a strong determination inside their heart to finish this project. This is essential that we must carry on NON-STOP to get things done. I've heard many stories about how people failed in making their own mirror just because they want to take break at the middle, but later the break proved to be a forever termination of the project

Conseguently in order to finish the 24 inch, the stuents must be psychologically strong. Their physical weakness does not matter.
